The Vast Universe
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings upon you all and welcome to the June 19th khutbah for the Horizons Mosque.
What an amazing world we live in. Everything around us has been crafted precisely by God, from the tilt of the Earth that gives us our seasons, to the design of our own bodies that allows us to create life within. Surah 39:5 states “He it is who has created the heavens and the earth in accordance with [an inner] truth. He causes the night to flow into the day, and causes the day to flow into the night; and He has made the sun and the moon subservient [to His laws], each running its course for a term set. Is not He the Almighty, the All-Forgiving?”
How often do we take the time to ponder the workings of God’s numerous creations, and how often do we thank God for His handiwork that allows for our even existence?
Surah 3:190-191: “Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the succession of night and day, there are indeed messages for all who are endowed with insight, [and] who remember God when they stand, and when they sit, and when they lie down to sleep, and [thus] reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: "O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created [aught of] this without meaning and purpose. Limitless art Thou in Thy glory! Keep us safe, then, from suffering through fire!”
God is the Creator and the Lord of all that is. He knows the billions of stars in the vast universe by name, and He even knows each one of us intimately enough to know the number of hairs on our heads. God has shaped each of us precisely as in Surah 82:6-7: “O Man! What is it that lures thee away from thy bountiful Sustainer, who has created thee, and formed thee in accordance with what thou art meant' to be, and shaped thy nature in just proportions…”
Over and over again in our lives we forget to be appreciative of God’s amazing creation. We get lost in the small insignificancies of life, and we loose sight of the beauty of the world around us.
Surah 56:68-74: “Have you ever considered the water which you drink? Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? Were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks? Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? It is We who have made it a means to remind and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness. Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer’s mighty name!”
Let us always be appreciative of the beautiful inner workings of ourselves and the world around us. Remember to take time every day to enjoy the perfection God has created. As we ponder the amazing creation of our Lord, may we most of all be thankful.
Thank you for joining us today at Horizons Mosque for the Friday khutbah. May God be pleased by our actions and the affirmations in our hearts.
